THE
VETERAN
I met Moses, his given name,
while driving through Petersburg,
Tennessee. After seeing him, I knew
that I would have to paint him. He
had character few people have.
While talking to him, I found out that he
was a World War I veteran. His age
to the best of my knowledge was around
100 when I painted him. He lived
another five years. To my regret he
never got to see the painting as he was
admitted to the Alvin C. York veteran's
home about six months into the
painting. He died on January 15,
1993. It remains my favorite painting. |
